Safety Is A State of Mind

As the United States recovers from this worldwide recession, workplaces are faced with the same challenges that have been with us before during times of economic distress. Many workplaces reduced their headcount to ensure viability during the down period and are now evaluating future staffing possibilities. One challenge is that production will return to normal levels, however, the number of employees may be less. This will mean completing the same amount of work with fewer employees, increasing the physical demands, and working overtime. Another issue is that employees who may have been let go have found other jobs in new industries. Employers will have to bring on new employees who are not as familiar with the new work. Training these employees will be crucial, as well as, ensuring the employees are on board with the workplace safety culture.

Even though production levels were down and unemployment was high, one fact did not change in the workplace; accidents and injuries were still possible and did happen. Regardless of the economic conditions, we as workers and employers must maintain that safety is not just something we can take for granted but it must be a State of Mind at all times!
