The Human and Financial Cost of Substance Misuse in Your Workplace

Description:
Since the onset of the pandemic, the prevalence of substance misuse and substance use disorders is rising. These developments have tragic human consequences and costly financial impacts on employers. Yet substance misuse remains the “elephant in the room” for many organizations in many industries. The success of workplace mental health and suicide prevention educational campaigns continues to overshadow those targeting substance misuse and substance use disorders.
The National Safety Council reports on average 1 in 12 workers (8.5 percent) has a substance use disorder. The rate varies between various industries. The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine reported, “seventy-five percent of adults experiencing an untreated substance use disorder are in the workforce.” And, the National Safety Council reported in 2019 that 75 percent of employers indicated their workplaces have been impacted by opioid use. More recently, the U.S. has experienced tragic consequences of substance misuse. One measure is the 25 percent spike in alcohol-related deaths during the pandemic. In addition, there were over 109,000 overdose deaths reported in 2022, with 70% of these involving opioids and almost 70% of the opioid-related overdoses involving the synthetic fentanyl.
Now more than ever, employers must recognize that traditional drug free workplace free programs and policies may check the compliance box, but they are falling short in effectiveness. This session points employers to learn how to de-stigmatize substance misuse and learn new methods to remove barriers for people in need to seek and accept help. The workplace can provide a safety net for those individuals slipping between the cracks with a caring culture, resources, including Employee Assistance Programs, Employee Benefits and support services.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the causes, consequences, costs, and counter-controls for substance misuse in the workplace
2. Learn how to overcome stigma with substance misuse and how to break down barriers to care in the workplace
3. Learn how the Substance Misuse Cost Calculator by the National Safety Council
4. Learn three leading gateways to new persistent opioid addiction and why stocking naloxone in the workplace or on jobsites will not solve the challenges
5. Discover first dose prevention strategies for opioids in the workplace and at home to protect your workforce and their families.
